This seems to be typical problem with Wacom tablets, which is odd because they have no moving parts to break and the electronics are basically a one-chip design. I suspect that Wacom is being caviler in the anti-static electricity measures in order to boost sales. 

So at least you are not the only person with this problem. My friend in the Dark Continent, BasJohn just had zany zebras take demonic possession of his Wacom.
