Butterflies and Caterpillars have it. Zebras’ or Tigers’ stripes help the animal blend into their environment. Why then shouldn’t a bird develop its own natural camouflage. Introducing the SkyBird: the first bird (that I know of) which blends into its surroundings; just so long as its surroundings are bright blue skies with little fluffy clouds.
Josh McKible created the PaperBird earlier this er…last year, and has been offering his designs as free downloads ever since. I met Josh at his booth at Design Festa, and was floored by his talent, and his nanibirds. 何 (nani?) means “what?”, and perfectly captures my reaction to life in Tokyo much of the time. When the bird evolved into a paper toy, I had to make one of my own.
The photo isn’t perfect, but it’s the best my lil’ digital camera can do. Which is okay, because I still need to make the little bitty birdy feet, and figure out what to put in the word balloon. After that, we’ll see if we can make Skybird available as a template on the PaperBird site. Here’s what he looks like before being glued together, with a better view of the colorful plumage. Kinda reminds me of a totem pole or a caduceus.

That is awesome looking. It is hard to believe that you can get those textures, and color blends from paper. I grew up thinking that all colored paper is the construction kind you use in kindergarden. The first two pictures almost look like they were made on a computer. Keep up the good work!

i think it’s really great you showed everyone else how to do it. it really does look great. i was wondering what kind of glue you use? i tried using stick glue for a mixed-media/painting i’ve been working on and found it left too much residue even when i was being super careful. i hope you make more of these!

Hi all, thanks for the comments, and welcome to everyone who is new to Papercuts.
James-I know exactly how you feel. Finding all the great handmade papers was a revelation to me too. Now I’m always on the lookout for new colors and textures. I’ve become a total paper geek.
elyce - Thanks. Paperbird isn’t really my design. It comes from Josh Mckible: http://www.mckibillo.com/PaperBirds/paperbirds.html If you go to his site, you can download a template to work on yourself. As for the glue, I use a few different types. To stick the edges together here, I used Sobo craft glue.
