Your Echoes, They Shake and Shape Me cut paper art by Patrick Gannon

The vast majority of words bounce off of us, leaving no impression, having no effect.

Every once in a great while however, we are impacted by that voice. The one that reverberates through us, burrowing past our armor to shake our bones.

If you’re in the Portland area or have access to a private jet, the “Puddletown” show is still ongoing. At least for a couple more days, until the 24th of December. They’ve got a very cool Quicktime tour of the gallery that makes it feel like you’re there. I only wish you could pan in on the individual artwork to get a better view. For that, you need to check out the opening night photos.

To get a really good view at the plethora of great art, check out the online shop. As far as I know, “Echoes” is still available. I dug up this awesome green-and-gold-frame that matches the shiny in the work beautifully. I only wish I had thought ahead to get a snapshot of it. Oh well.

Electric Narwhal Original Art Available thru Gallery 1988 SFI am writing today with a heavy heart.  One of my closest friends and artistic co-conspirators is deathly ill and quite likely not long for this mortal coil.

I am speaking, of course, about my faithful iMac.  Pristine and white, and oddly square, it has perched on the back of my desk for nearly 3 years now, providing constant inspiration and assistance in my endeavors.  Recently, it has been making an off-putting clicking sound when starting up.  Then, yesterday, it finally clicked it’s last, and will start no more.  Instead of the comforting grey apple floating in the middle of the screen, there sat a file folder and a blinking question mark.  A last cryptic remark on the inability of those left behind to know what lays beyond that last shadowy vale, in that undiscovered country.

Like a good soldier and friend, my iMac managed to gasp back to life long enough for me to copy most of the important files I needed.  I’m sure I’ll lose some things, but I grabbed everything that looked even slightly dire.  And thank god for extended warranties.

Actually, alot of folks have been asking lately about the part computers play in my creative process.  Many assume that, because I prefer to work in real-world materials like paper and wood, I’m some sort of Luddite. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy New Year at Gallery kopis, opens December 14, 2008

Everything comes in threes these days.

On Sunday December 14, 2008, “A Happy New Year” group show opens at Gallery kopis here in Tokyo. In fact, it opens right around the same time the SCBWI Tokyo Illustrator Exhibit will be coming down. If you time it right, you can get to both shows in one day!

“A Happy New Year” (干支 エトセトラ) will showcase work based on New Year’s cards and the chinese zodiac animals. If you’ve been studying your katakana, however, you might have noticed a big ‘ol “etcetera” in the Japanese title. So really, anything goes. Should be fun! My presence at this show will be a bit smaller than at the previous one in August, but for good reason. The artwork from the previous week’s Christmas-themed show will remain alongside the 6 new artists opening this week. It promises to be an eye-popping holiday extravaganza!

The details:

Here’s a link to the gallery (all in Japanese!)

And here’s a map (also in Japanese).

The Simplicity of the Path, The Fortitude to Keep to It (丑年) cut paper art by Patrick Gannon

2009 will be the 丑年 (ushidoshi), the Year of the Ox. Or Cow, if you prefer. Prosperity through strength, fortitude, and a level-head. Being a reformed farmboy, I haven’t been impressed with either the intelligence or leadership of the domestic cow. I’m willing to give the much more commanding ox the benefit of the doubt, though.

You might notice a bit of a similarity to another piece of art I pasted together not-so-long-ago. As is often the case when I work, I end up with unused pieces. In this case, the bright red of the cow was left over from that project. Although I loved the color, it didn’t work as well as the red and gold paper. That leftover piece gave birth to this idea; a more minimalist Ox for a clean, fresh New Year. Read the rest of this entry »

Update: 12.9.08- The Calendar is now 100% good to go! Lulu just got the preview creator fixed and I have verified that it is, indeed, for 2009. Place your orders now to be in time for the holidays! And thank you again for your patience!

2009 cut-paper art calendar image
Ah, the drama continues. I’ve decided, after a little bit of soul-searching, to make the 2009 Cut Paper Art Calendar available again.

Why all the soul-searching and fingernail biting? I’m only 95% sure that the printing problems are fixed. And I like to be 100% sure of stuff. Unfortunately, until Lulu squishes the bugs in it’s website, I can’t create a calendar preview and verify that last 5%.

Still, I’m reasonably certain that the calendar was created correctly, right up until I pushed the “publish” button. The images printed great before, so it’s just the dates I’d like to triple check. More importantly, if I wait for Lulu to iron things out, chances are we’ll miss Christmas. And maybe next year too. The whole year. I’ll let all y’all know if there’s any change to report. For now, you can feel 95% confident that you’ll be getting a cool calendar.

Thanks to the fantastic art fan who emailed me to let me know there was a problem with the calendar. Even bigger thanks and a giant internet hug goes out to all of you who bought the calendar, then emailed me to say that you picked it up for the art and the dates weren’t a big deal. You guys are the greatest.

Just (kinda, sorta) in time for the Holidays comes Postcard Pack Two! Available right away in my online shop, this pack collects 5 more of my favorite cut paper pieces. I’m happy to say they came out great and look truly amazing!

Postcard Pack Two by Patrick Gannon

“The Golden Sea, It Has Teeth”, “We All Laugh Together”, “I Will Stitch Myself a New Fur Coat”, “A Welcome Messenger”, and “Social Grooming”.

Get a pack of all five cards for $6 US (or ¥600). Or get the combo set of Postcard Pack One + Two, 10 amazing images for $10 (¥1000). Hey, these days, two bucks is two bucks, right?!

Holiday and Christmas Orders: A quick note if you plan on giving a print or postcard as a gift. I’m shipping these items from Tokyo, so keep that in mind and give yourself a little extra time for the package to get there. Japan Post suggests that all regular air mail packages be sent out by December 12th. Get your postcard order in by December 10, 2008 to give me time to pack and ship.

Prints are sent out priority, so there’s a little extra time there. I’d suggest giving yourself at least a week to be on the safe side. After all, I’m just one man!

Puddletown at Compound Gallery December 4-24Compound Gallery of Portland, Oregon hosts “Puddletown”, the latest show I’ve had the pleasure of being invited to join. Portland joins an increasingly long list of places that I’ve never been to, but am dying to check out. Rumor has it, it can get a little damp. After the amount of rain we’ve been getting in Tokyo these few years, I am no longer phased by mere precipitation. In any event, they seem to have embraced their climate:

For most people rain means a gloomy day. Here in Portland, rain is a fact of life. It makes us who we are. Puddletown will feature an artist’s view on rain.

Opening Reception: December 4, 2008 7pm
Dates: December 4th-24th, 2008
Place: Compound Gallery, 107 NW 5th Avenue, Portland, OR 97209

Update: 12.9.08- The Calendar is now 100% good to go! Lulu just got the preview creator fixed and I have verified that it is, indeed, for 2009. Place your orders now to be in time for the holidays! And thank you again for your patience!

UPDATE 12.8.08: I am 95% certain that the printing error (the calendars printed with 2008′s dates instead of 2009′s!) has been fixed. Unfortunately, until Lulu fixes their website and I can create a preview of the calendar, I cannot verify that final 5%. Please keep that in mind when ordering. Also, this is an entirely new product, so all of the old links or bookmarks are invalid. I have fixed links to the calendar from the shop page and this blog. The URL should read: http://www.lulu.com/content/5178239

A Major Printing Error has been discovered with this calendar. Please hold off on purchasing until we are able to resolve this problem. If you have purchased this item please email me as soon as possible.

2009 cut-paper art calendar image

What, you might ask, would constitute a major printing error? Perhaps the artwork titles are off? Could it be that an image is cropped badly? Mayhaps the color does not quite match my exacting standards?

Poppycock! Balderdash! Amateur mistakes!

No, when we screw up here, we do it with style and pizazz. And tons of collateral damage. Oh yes, we may go down in flames, but we sure as heck are gonna take as much of the planet along for the ride as we can!

These calendars are the wrong year. Yes, now you too can relive the ups and downs, tragedies and triumphs of 2008. Once again, experience the collapse of an economy and the triumphant rise of a new president-elect. And, you know, you get to drop a full 365 days from your age.
