Time, they say, marches inexorably, implacably forward. The earth spins on its axis while hurtling, tight in gravity’s grip, around it’s nearest star. Seconds slide by unnoticed except by runners. Minutes meander on. Hours humbly fade. Days disappear. Weeks wane, months make a break for it, and years yield to no one.
Thankfully, in the meantime there is art and beauty and mice.
Yes, mice. Those sometimes adored, sometimes reviled, often scurrying little symbols of fertility and cheese consumption. The bane of cats and elephants everywhere.
2020 will be the Year of the Mouse. Or Rat. Whichever you prefer.
A nest full of these remarkable rodents has gathered at Arts Rush Gallery, just in time to celebrate the New Year.
No fewer than 10 artists try their hands at interpreting the rat, in all of its power and glory.
I’m happy to have a brand new piece in the show; a new interpretation of the rat, and a possible new direction for the Eto theme. Twelve years ago, the Rat was the first Eto piece made in my current style, not long after arriving in Japan. Now that the series is nearly complete (there are a few pieces I’m still working on re-doing or finessing), it felt appropriate to try something quite different. So, I tied the Eto theme into the Relics series (1, 2) I’ve been playing with recently.
