⊛ March 25 - April 13, 2020

I’m thrilled and excited to be invited to join Arts Rush Gallery’s Kachofugetsu 「花鳥風月」exhibition for the third (3rd!) time this Spring. Given everything that’s going on in the world (and my own life), it’s a timely reminder to slow down and appreciate the natural beauty that is waking up all around us.

If you’re reading about Kachofugetsu for the first time, the Japanese 花鳥風月 is a  yoji-jukugo (四字熟語), a collection of four Chinese/Japanese kanji characters that make up a sort of minimalist idiom, saying, or poem.

The four characters 花鳥風月 mean:  Flower, Bird, Wind, and Moon.

But don’t take those too literally (I do every time I start sketching, before I remind myself to be an artist). These four images are meant to call to mind a tradition of appreciating nature’s glories and gifts through art. That sounds like something that we could all benefit from having a bit more of in our lives right now.

9 artists (myself included) have honed their brushes, knives, pencils, talents, and imagination in on the wonder that surround us, just past the concrete edges and over the roadside barriers. If you’re in Tokyo, stop on by and enjoy a brief natural respite in the heart of the city.
