Socrates drank the Hemlock.

Hercules perished by the rather roundabout way of robes soaked in the blood of an enemy slain with his own hydra-venom poisoned arrows.

Hamlet’s tragic arc begins when his uncle Claudius drips deadly nightshade into the ear of the sleeping King. Maybe. Unless Hamlet imagined the whole thing. It’s complicated.

Rasputin devoured a cyanide-laced feast, and lived. Briefly.

Snow White chowed down on that perfectly toxic apple.

History and literature is rife with poisonings, venomous assassinations, toxic suicides, and accidental fatal mushroom tastings. Even Indiana Jones had to deal with “bad dates” (that poor monkey).

Why is poison so fascinating (in ancient history and art, less so in undercooked chicken)? Maybe because it’s so nasty. Sure, getting stabbed with a sword makes the tragic hero just as dead, but poisoning them just seems …mean.

Eight contemporary artists trifle with toxins and investigate venoms in ポイズン • Poison, the group exhibition opening today at Arts Rush Gallery in Daikanyama, Tokyo. Dangerous dolls, malevolent metalwork, and poisonous paper pictures gloriously adorn the walls of the cozy space, awaiting the unsuspecting lover of art.

I’ve got two new, lethal pieces in the show (there’s a teaser at the bottom of the post). Stop on by. Just be careful what you eat or drink.
